| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to investigate and develop a method for dyeing freshwater pearls with an inorganic compound and to explore the story of the Birth of Venus as a source of artistic inspiration for contemporary jewelry design. Theresearch brought together material science, art,and design through a creative research approach combined with practical experimentation. The study was conducted in three stages. The first examined the characteristics of freshwater pearl shells and pearls, including surface preparation prior to dyeing. The second involved dyeing experiments using potassium permanganate (KMnO₄),with pH, solution concentration, and dyeing time as the main experimental variables. The third analyzed representations of the Birth of Venus in Western art to identify symbolic and aesthetic concepts that could be translated into contemporary jewelry design. The results showed that surface preparation with a mild acid improved color adhesion while preserving the natural luster of thenacre. Dyeing with potassium permanganate produced a range of golden yellow, muted gold, and light brown tones. Color intensity varied according to pH and dyeing time, with acidic conditions producing more pronounced coloration than neutral conditions. Although some variation in color occurred among individual pearls, these differences reflected the inherent characteristics of natural materials and could be incorporated into the design as an aesthetic quality rather than regarded solely as a limitation ofthe dyeing process. The analysis of the Birth of Venus led to three central ideas—birth, transformation, and beauty emerging from nature—which provided the conceptual basis for the jewelry designs. Rather than directly reproducing imagery from classical artworks, these ideas were interpreted through material, color, form, and process. The resulting jewelry featured free-form compositions, flowing lines, organic movement, and deliberate irregularities that emphasized material expression and the process of transformation. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of integrating material science with creative jewelry design, allowing the physical transformation of a material to contribute to both the aesthetic and conceptual development of the work. The findings can support further applications in jewelry education, artistic practice, and the development of material-based approaches to contemporary jewelry design. | en |
