Abstract

The single-impression procedure is a concept aimed at reducing the steps in the fabrication of complete dentures for edentulous patients by combining the functional impression step with the jaw relationship recording step into a single process. This approach uses three-dimensional denture morphology measurements to design average sized impression trays for single-impression procedures. However, current morphological measurements require medical professionals to manually identify points, making the process time-consuming. This study proposes an automatic 3D dental morphological measurement method for designing impression trays for edentulous patients, reducing time and workload while improving repeatability. The proposed method consists of three steps: (1) Curvature analysis, (2) Tooth identification, and (3) Point identification. The accuracy of the proposed method was validated by comparing its results with manual measurements performed by medical personnel using the measure grid tool in the 3Shape dental system software. The results showed that the distances T3, T4 and T12 had ICC values greater than 0.9, indicating excellent agreement between the two methods. The distances of T1, T7, T11, and T13 have ICC values between 0.75 and 0.9, indicating good agreement. Meanwhile, the distances of T5, T6, T8, and T10 have ICC values between 0.5 and 0.75, reflecting moderate agreement. In contrast, the distances of T2 and T9 have ICC values below 0.5, suggesting poor agreement. Additionally, the distances of T1, T4, T12, and T13 had a mean absolute error of less than 1 mm, indicating high accuracy comparable to manual measurements.
