Abstract
Sustainability has become a key priority in the sport industry, driving substantial research growth over the past decade amid increasing stakeholder expectations and global sustainability initiatives. Among the emerging frameworks in this domain, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) has gained significant prominence, with a growing number of sport organizations adopting it to guide sustainable management practices. However, despite the rising number of studies on sport sustainability, research on the comprehensive application of ESG—particularly within the context of sporting events—remains scattered and underdeveloped, as most existing studies address only isolated dimensions of sustainability. To bridge this gap, the present study aims to conduct a systematic literature review of sustainable sport event management through the lens of ESG. Data collected in 2024, covering publications from database inception to 2023 and sourced from Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), yielded 26 studies that encompassed all three ESG dimensions within sport event management. These studies were carefully screened and analyzed using both descriptive and deductive content analyses. The findings illustrate the current landscape of ESG-related research in sport event management, revealing a strong emphasis on individual ESG dimensions, particularly social factors. Furthermore, the analysis identifies a relatively narrow range of topics within the ESG framework, primarily focusing on ESG practices and processes, impacts, and the legacy of hosting sport events. The study concludes by proposing future research directions aimed at advancing more comprehensive and integrated sustainability practices in sport event management.
