Abstract
Reading serves as a form of communication, and there are multiple approaches to developing reading skills for students with special needs. One effective approach is using Easy Read digital media, which features systematic visual presentations proven to enhance reading skills for students with autism, minor intellectual disabilities, and learning disabilities. This study aimed to investigate the Easy Read format, review related research, analyze existing literature, and design tailored digital materials for primary Grades 1-3 level, subsequently assessing them on students with intellectual disabilities. Hence, the findings manifest Easy Read's efficacy as assistive technology, significantly improving both communication and educational outcomes. Grade 1 students with minor intellectual disabilities achieved comprehension rates exceeding 50% for both individual words and complete sentences. Similarly, Grade 2 and Grade 3 students exhibited near complete comprehension rates exceeding 50% for words and sentences. These results highlight the substantial benefits of integrating Easy Read techniques structured image placement, systematic word and sentence arrangement, appropriate font sizing, and carefully selected colors in optimizing readability and comprehension for students facing challenges related to intellectual disabilities in reading.
