Abstract
The water hammer demonstrate apparatus have been deviced to explain the effect of water hammer in the water supply piping system and it ร remedy.The water hammer demonstrate apparatus is the model of water supply system using 1 Hp pump to supply water through l” sch 40 ( STD ) with gate valve and ball valve at inlet and solenoid valve with pressure transducer at the outlet. The water is suppliedto the system by the pump from mian tank and collected at the calibrated tank.The principle operation of the apparatus is to supply water from main tank by the pump and collect at calibrate tank the experiment is carried out by various pressure using gate valve and for each pressure value the outlet is cut off by the solenoid valve and the corresponding pressure rise is noted by the use of pressure transducer and oscilloscope. From the experiment found that for each cut off at outlet there is sudden increase in the pressure in the system and reduced gradually
by the friction developed between water and pipe surfaces. This is called water hammer and which is leads to damage the system if occured repetatively. Hence to avoid the water hammer and to prevent the system from damage the project team deviced a air chamber ( 100 X 150 mm ) before the outlet to absorb
the pressure due to water hammer up to 100 liters/min.
