This article presents beam switching at a mobile terminal using only a single-element antenna. There are eight different directions which are controlled by shorted and open circuits at the edge of a radiating patch. Shorted and open circuits were considered for use in a radial-basis function network to operate a suitable beam at a mobile terminal. The mean square error of beam selection was 5.31×10-33, which can confirm that the proposed radial-basis function network provides accuracy in selecting the main beam direction toward the cell site. Moreover, the article reveals that the performance in terms of SIR and channel capacity confirms a performance improvement when the proposed concept is utilized. © 2017 Journal of Communications.
