Abstract: Polybenzoxazines as a novel phenolic type thermosetting polymer have been developed to overcome the shortcomings associated with the use of the traditional novolac and resol-type phenolic resins. They can be prepared from cyclic benzoxazines via thermally induced ring-opening polymerization. Various benzoxazine monomers can be synthesized from mono-or biphenols, paraformaldehyde and aniline. Then, the different approaches for performance improvement of polybenzoxazine have been investigated. These approaches include hybrid with other high performance polymers and reinforcing with natural fillers, long fibers, and inorganic fillers. In these approaches, lowering of the cure temperature, enhance-ment of toughness, and improvement of thermal and mechanical pro-perties were achieved. In addition, some application potentials of poly-benzoxazine-based materials are also considered. © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
