Abstract: A new adsorbent, trimethyl quaternized biopolmer, synthesized by incorporating a biopolymer with a high concentration of quaternary ammmonium hydroxide reactive site, was used for CO2 adsorption from power plant flue gases. The degree of quaternization and OH conversion were respectively confirmed at 74% and 100% by titration. Based on preliminary tests in dry adsorption, trimethylbiopolymer (TMBP) worked more effectively in CO2 removal than biopolymer (BP). A 15 min pretreatment time was found to be optimum and essential in boosting both the CO2 adsorption capacity and saturation time of the adsorbent. The capacity was also temperature dependent decreasing with an increase in temperature. The effective desorption of CO2 was at 373 K. © 2013 The Author.
