Abstract:
This article aims to study the clothes-trade in Siam Society from Ayutthaya period to the reign of King Chulalongkorn. This article also aims to find out, if and how the Siamese took part in the clothes trade and what was its origin.The study finds out that the clothes-trade in Ayutthaya period to the early Rattanakosin period took place alongside with the textile-trade. In the early Rattanakosin period, clothes from China were imported to Siam. In the reign of King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn, western textiles and clothes were popular in Siam., so that more tailor shops owned by Westerners were opened in Siam. After the Siamese learned how to make clothes in western style, they and a small group of Chinese did open the tailor shops themselves.
