Abstract:
This article aims to analyze Jujaka’s face threatening strategies against addressees in
Mahavessantara Jataka, 13-Sermon Mahajati using face threatening criteria of Brown and
Levinson (1987). The results show that Jujaka uses 17 strategies in face threatening 6 of which
are positive face threatening which includes boasting, scolding, talking about the forbidden,
talking about the inappropriate, name calling, and refuting. Eleven strategies are negative face
threatening which includes promising, commanding, teaching, begging, offering,
complimenting, wishing, dare, threatening, persuading and blaming. It was found that Jujaka’s
chosen face threatening strategies against addressees are mainly based on the addressee’s
power and status.
