Abstract:
Thailand has fully entered the aging society since 2016, with 16.5% of the elderly and
the advancement in medical science making the population live longer than ever. However,
the deteriorating physical condition and changing society affect the lives of the elderly as well.
The study of creating a city of equality and thoroughness for the elderly in the city has the
objectives of studying the urban lifestyle of the elderly and to find a model and guidelines
that are suitable for a comprehensive consideration of Thailand's urban areas. The study area
is the urban area in the Khlong Toey community, lock no. 19-22. The study method is to
collect document information on history, background, area coexistence and socioeconomic
information, and data from field visits participatory observation, in-depth interviews with 6
elderly persons.
The results show that the elderly in the Khlong Toey community in lock no. 19-22 is a
legend of the slum community in Thailand. Khlong Toei was established in the year 1943 by
expropriating land in Khlong Toei and Bangchak sub-districts for use in maritime transport and
later upgraded to the Port of Thailand. The elderly in the Khlong Toey community in lock no.
19-22 lives the life of the elderly in urban areas on the flats in their rooms. They rarely
participate in public activities. The relationship between the elderly and the outside areas is
extremely loose; besides going to a doctor's appointment, they are infrequently seen outside
the community. There is no technological innovation to facilitate their lives. The elderly have
demanded the development of urban areas so that their standard of living can be raised to
the same level as others. Arranging for the elderly to come down to relax by creating a
pedestrian crossing using intelligent technology and a residence with the right environment
will surely fulfill the elderly’s desire.
