Abstract:
This research is aimed to study the strategies anddevelopment in learning the meaning of Chinese pictophonetic characters by Chinese major university students in order to propose a method to help improve the learning of Chinese pictophonetic characters by Chinese major students and making the teaching of Chinese pictophonetic characters more effective. The participants were 123first to third year students from five universities who study Chinese a major. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The result was used to classify students’ acquisition levels and was analyzed using both descriptive and statistical analysis. The research findings are as follows.1. Strategies in learning the meaning of pictophonetic characters by Chinese majorstudents can be divided into four acquisition levels from high to low: direct inference from the semantic indicator, analogy with similar-looking charactersor semantically related words, inference from the phonetic indicator, and random guess. 2. Chineselanguage proficiency has an influence on the acquisition of meaning of Chinese pictophonetic characters. Learning of high proficient students tends to be more systematic and organized. 3. The meaning acquisition proceeded at a slow rate.In the first year, the meaning acquisition was not systematic, the students can not use clues from semantic indicator to recognize character meaning. In the second year, the meaning acquisition entered a more systemized stage, the students can begin todistinguish semantic indicator from pictophonetic characters. In the third year, the meaning acquisition remained in the same stage and wasnot movedtowards the mastery level.
