Abstract:
This chemical engineering project entitled “Competitive Removal of Mixed Metal Ions in Packed Bed Column by NaOH-Modified Sunflower Seed Husk” was studied. Firstly, sunflower husk was treated by 10%wt NaOH and sieved to a certain size of 500 to 710 micrometers. Secondly, optimum pH for metal ion removal was investigated in the range of 2 to 5 in batch mode and the results showed that the optimum pH is 5 for Ni(II) Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal by the
husk with 65.43%, 98.93% and 96.85% removal respectively. Whereas the optimum pH for Zn(II) removal was 4 with the percentage of 81.72. Finally, the experiment was carried out for competitive removal with 10 centimeters height bed, flow rate of 5 milliliters per minute and solution pH 5 in packed column. From our experimental result, it was found that the potential of removal capacity of metal ions were Pb(lI) > Ni(Il) > Cd(II) > Zn(n) respectively. Moreover, the removal metal ions were fitted to Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model. The maximum adsorption capacity (Na) and adsorption rate coefficient (KJ for Pb(II) were 2,785.62 milligrams per liter and 1.34x104 liter per milligrams-minute; 2,271.00 milligrams per liter and 4.12x105 liter per milligrams-minute for Ni(II); 2,009.01 milligrams per liter and 6.83x105 liter per milligrams-minute for Cd(II) and the last for Zn(II) were 1,597.54 milligrams per liter 1.47x1 o'4 liter per milligrams-minute respectively.
