Abstract: | A novel composite-based packaging was prepared by blending poly(lactic acid) (PLA) with various concentrations (0, 4, 6 and 8%, w/w) of limonene and was applied to prolong the shelf life of fresh beef meat during cold storage. The barrier properties of the prepared films and the microbiological qualities of packed ground beef were evaluated. Both water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen transmission rate (OTR) were reduced as the contents of limonene increased. To apply the PLA bags containing limonene to food packaging, the beef meat was packed with the films and stored at 4oC for 12 day. The total viable count (TVB), total coliform, Pseudomonas spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were monitored. According to microbiological standard, the shelf life of the control sample and the sample packed with PLA-limonene (4%) was approximately 6 days while the samples packed with PLA-limonene at the concentration of 6 and 8% were assured for at least 9 and 12 days of storage, respectively. These results indicate that the PLA containing limonene can be utilized as an antimicrobial packaging for the beef meat. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery. |
