Abstract:
LoRaWAN is the low power wide area network that offers long-range communication. It has been widely used in outdoor IoT applications. There are many available LoRaWAN platforms for users. However, for data privacy concerned applications, using them need to be careful. Platforms know all session keys to decrypt user data. We proposed a mitigation solution by adding the encryption at the user endpoints to prevent platforms. We experiment on two LoRaWAN platforms: The Things Network (TTN) and Lora IoT by CAT. The result shows that the packet latency between endpoints is increased from regular usage only 0.359 and 0.529 seconds on average for TTN and LoRa IoT by CAT, respectively. Our solution consumes battery power 41.66 mWh on average, which is very close to without our solution in terms of power consumption. The results confirm that the proposed solution is worth to apply to protect data while using LoRaWAN platforms. © 2020 IEEE.
